Rhythm Devils in Steamboat Springs

July 24, 2010 · Posted in Rambles · Comment

The whole town came out to Howelsen Hill yesterday to listen to the Rhythm Devils. The show was part of the Summer Free Concert series; huge thank yous for the promoters for finally getting a band other than the Wailers.

For those of you not familiar with the Rhythm Devils, the band was founded by Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead. Over the years their band has had a revolving troupe of members. This summer the Rhythm Devils include the one-man band of Keller Williams (guitar, vocals), Davy Knowles (Backdoor Slam – guitar, vocals), Andy Hess (bass), and Sikiru Adepoju (talking drum).

Set-list:

Sitting on Top of the World
Iko Iko
Comes a Dawn
Fire on the Mountain
Fountains of Wood
Ticket to Nowhere
Good Lovin
Voodoo Zombies
Wrecking Crew

Encore: Almost Cut My Hair

Show notes: Voodoo Zombies was awesome; Davy Knowles is amazing and Mickey Hart managed to screw up Iko Iko. Seriously, how many times has he played that damn song? Pretty funny.

If you want to give the show a listen, you can download it here: COTapers.org. You will need to register if you are not already a member. Once you are a member you will have access to a treasure trove of wonderful music. Thanks to phrog for flying the mics.

The Drew Emmitt Band

Drew Emmitt performed live at Howelsen Hill to kick off our free Summer Concert Series. They were fun, but I’m not that into Bluegrass. The one thing that struck me as interesting is it that the guitar player looks eerily like Trey from Phish. Judge for yourself:

Los Lonely Boys at Howelsen Hill

The summer concert series continued with Los Lonely Boys. The crowd was big and most of the people seemed to be really enjoying themselves. All I can say is that I wasn’t into it. Before I get a bunch of hate comments let me finish by saying that it wasn’t any fault of the band. I don’t know the band or their music and it just wasn’t my kind of thing. If you want a copy of the show go to phrog.org.

I am looking forward to the next show which will be Sam Bush.

Mofro at Howelsen Hill

JJ Grey & MofroThis show was the second in the Summer Free Concert Series in Steamboat Springs. What an amazing show this was. Laura from Little Moon Essentials started off the show with the Holden Young Trio with special guest Dave Allen. Mofro took the stage around 7:30 and blew us away with some Florida Swamp rock. This band has been a favorite for a few years now. You can get a copy of the show at archive.org. The whole evening went off perfectly. No one screwed up the beer. The crowd was full of energy and completely into the music. The weather was beautiful with a tiny sprinkle to cool things off a bit.

Summer Free Concert Series Kick-Off

The WailersSummer has officially begun here in the NW corner of Colorado and the Wailers were here to help us celebrate. Anyone familiar with the summer concerts knows that we can be in the middle of a drought, yet it will rain on the day of the free concert. This was definately not the case today. The day was hot and sunny. Perfect for some reggae from Jamaica. So here is my take on the show. I didn’t get a warm fuzzy from the band. They just didn’t seem into it. In fact, a couple of the members actually looked bored. Take my criticism with a grain of salt – I am not a huge Wailers fan. Having said that I would like to add that the crowd was fun and the sound was great.

Here’s a short list of the crap that was basically fucked up:

  • Due to a filing error there was no alcohol.
  • Whoever the announcer was, you must go away. Annoying is an understatement. Proof to come soon.
  • Whoever the camera dude was – you are an asshole. You physically pushed me out of the way to film some dancing chicks. Then as you were leaving you nearly took out the taping rig. Since you were carrying around an expensive piece of equipment I would think that you would have some respect for other expensive equipment. An apology would be nice.

All in all I did enjoy myself. It was fucking free, right?
