Formula 1 2010 New Rules
Here is a list of the confirmed changes in regulations for the 2010 Formula 1 season:
- Refueling: In an effort to reduce costs, no refueling will be allowed during the race. This will require the cars to have larger fuel tanks to accommodate the extra fuel. Cars will therefore be heavier so the minimum weight has been raised from 605kg to 620kg.
- Points System: Instead of the top eight finishers receiving points the new system will allow for the top ten drivers to be awarded points. This is due to the addition of four new teams to the grid this season. Points will now be awarded as follows (starting from 1st position): 25, 20, 15, 10, 8, 6, 5, 3, 2 and 1.
- KERS: Although the ban on KERS (kinetic energy replacement system) hasn’t been added to the rule book, supposedly all of the teams have agreed to not implement them.
- Wheels & Tires: The front tires will be narrower this season to help with grip balance between the front and rear tires. The front tires will now be 270mm down from last year’s 245mm. The FIA has also eliminated the wheel covers that were so problematic last year. Teams have also agreed upon the top 10 finishers in Q3 to start the race with the same tires that they set their fastest lap with.
- Testing: Substitute drivers who have not participated in an F1 race in the past two years will be allowed one test day on a track that is not part of the circuit. Also, all team factories will be closed during the mid-summer break.
