Creepers ~ David Morrell

January 31, 2009 · Posted in Book Reviews · Comment

creepersThe title is a bit misleading. Makes me think of some sort of invasion by creepy-crawly things that have mutated due to a radiation leak from a Siberian nuclear power plant. Creepers is actually the name given to a bunch of explorers who investigate old abandoned buildings. Think spelunking. This book is a roller coaster ride of craziness. The explorers, thinking they are on a routine expedition into an old building, are instead plunged into a building hiding many secrets. Soon after entering the building much mayhem and mystery ensue. Creepers is one of those great “stuck in an airport books”; quick, easy to read, edge of your seat fun.

Disclosure ~ Michael Crichton

disclosureI picked this book up at the local thrift shop. It was a few days after Michael Crichton had passed away. The only oher books I had read by him were Jurassic Park and Lost World. Both of which I enjoyed greatly. This book was OK. It’s one of those quick to read, nothing really memorable types of books. I guess I was hoping for something a bit different. Anyway, this is a story about a guy who works in a major corporation who gets passed over for a promotion that he thought he was the shoe-in to get. The position is given to a woman who turns out to be an old fling of his. Then we have a sexual harassment suit and keeping with my no spoiler rule, that’s all you’re gonna get from me.

Farewell George W. Bush

Tomorrow is the big day. The day we hand over the “Ring of Power” to our best hope at putting our country back together. I wonder what emotions he will be experiencing when President Obama walks into the Oval Office that first day. I wouldn’t be surpised if one of those emotions was fear. Fear of the monumental list of fires that he will be charged with dousing. He may even recall the words of John F. Kennedy:
“When we got into office, the thing that surprised me most was to find that things were just as bad as we’d been saying they were.”
This Reuters article sums it up quite well when they say:

bushNot since Herbert Hoover left Franklin Roosevelt the Great Depression has a U.S. president left his successor a litany of problems seemingly as daunting as George W. Bush will bequeath to Barack Obama when he takes office on January 20.

PETA (People for The Ethical Treatment of Animals) wants fish to be renamed to “Sea Kittens”:

It wants to change the image of fish as slimy and slithery creatures by claiming they are similar to cuter, more popular animals. “Would people think twice about ordering fish sticks if they were called sea kitten sticks?” PETA asked on its website.

2009 – The Year When Civility Returns?

January 3, 2009 · Posted in Rambles · Comment

There is no doubt that the long Presidential election of 2008 rattled everyone’s cages a bit. And as November’s election day grew nearer the nastiness also grew proportionally. Racial epitaphs were thrown about, neighbors were attacking neighbors over yard signs and others faked attacks to further fuel the hate. Now the election is over, a new President has been appointed and 2008 is a fading memory. What is in store for us as we ring in the New Year?

A lot of people will answer that by saying we have a mountain of shit to overcome; the economy is in the toilet, unemployment is rampant, Iraq, Afghanistan, Israel, and on and on goes the list. Amongst all of this madness there is one thing that, I feel, is being overlooked. Something that, perhaps, is at the root of all of our problems. I’m talking about basic manners and etiquette.
