The Drew Emmitt Band

Drew Emmitt performed live at Howelsen Hill to kick off our free Summer Concert Series. They were fun, but I’m not that into Bluegrass. The one thing that struck me as interesting is it that the guitar player looks eerily like Trey from Phish. Judge for yourself:

Our New Deck

June 24, 2008 · Posted in Rambles · Comment

Due to having to support a hot-tub for many years our deck was pulling away from the house. It had been doing this for a few years and it was only a matter of time before it gave way completely. Most likely at a time when we were in the hot-tub. This is the story of our journey into the realm of deck construction. A much longer journey than either of us had been prepared for.

I was going to give a blow-by-blow, day-by-day commentary, however, I was too exhausted at the end of each day to type. Now that most of the work is completed, I just can’t bring myself to relive each and every day. I have now opted for a photo journalistic approach. Enjoy.

The project took us two weeks to complete. It may have gone a lot quicker had any of us known what in the hell we were doing. The weather also caused us some delays; it was brutally hot. Dave and I would put on a couple of boards and have to retreat to the shade. There was quite a bit of stress at the onset. Unfortunately, Dave and I do not make good laborers and refuse to be ordered around. Especially, since it is our house. Things did eventually settle down and a steady routine of construction started to take hold. The deck is finished now and it is enormous and beautiful. All that remains is for the hot-tub to be relocated. More on that later.

Huge thank you’s and much gratitude goes out to the folks who stood by us through this endeavor:

  • Seymour – the bestest of best friends. Without you those deck boards would still be unpainted.
  • Mikey & Harry for all the long, hot hours of screwing and making the impossible seem possible.
  • Lock for owning serious power tools and getting those holes dug so quickly.
  • Our neighbors for donating all of the decking boards.

What We All Want

June 4, 2008 · Posted in Politics · 1 Comment

It is now Wednesday morning. The polls have closed for the remaining states. The long and arduous journey of choosing a democratic nominee for president is over. Or is it? Senator Clinton has yet to concede that she has lost. Nor has she acknowledged that Senator Obama has won. Now the question is, “What does Hillary want?” In her speech last night she claims that she wants to do what is best for the democratic party and for the country.

“In the coming days, I’ll be consulting with supporters and party leaders to determine how to move forward with the best interests of our party and our country guiding my way.”

Really? The bottom line is that what Hillary wants is what is best for Hillary. If the DNC wants Hillary to pack up her toys and go home, they will first have to play “Let’s Make a Deal’. She wants the vice presidency. She wants campaign contributions to pay off her debts. She wants a prime-time speaking slot at the convention in August. She wants us all to visit her web site and tell her what she wants. She wants us all to have patience as she decides what it is she wants in the coming days.

I have never been a Hillary supporter. And I don’t know anyone who is a Hillary supporter. Therefore, I cannot understand the rabid fanaticism shown by her followers. She has cried, lied, and made republican-style attacks against her opponent, Senator Obama. She is more-of-the-same type of old crony politics that we are all sick of. Yet many of her supporters say that hell will freeze over before they vote for Obama. Would they really prefer McCain in the White House?

I had to ask myself what I would do if Senator Obama had lost. There is no way in hell that I would vote for Senator McCain. I would like to see what Ron Paul decides to do. He has not dropped out plus he took 16% of the vote from McCain in South Dakota. The fact is that no republican may sit in the white house. Hillary is still the lesser of two evils and I would have to cast my vote for her. I’m fairly certain that the majority of Clinton’s supporters will also make the right decision come November.

Getting back to what Hillary wants and what is best for the country. One word: unity. All of those millions of voters, many first timers, who have backed Senator Clinton united with the millions of Obama voters would be an impenetrable force to reckon with. McCain wouldn’t stand a chance. If I were Hillary, I would want to be the democratic party’s standard bearer. I would want to bring together all of those millions of voices in support of Senator Obama and bring a knock-out blow to Senator McCain in November. What I wouldn’t want is to go down in history as a sore loser.
