Spring Fever

There’s two types of Spring Fever. One type is an affliction that begins to take hold sometime in March. The days get longer, the temperatures warmer, snow begins to melt. Birds that have been gone all winter return to stake out their summer roosts. The list of projects to be completed once the ‘weather is better’ gets longer and longer. You can’t wait to throw open all of the windows to purge the house of its stale winter air. Shake out the rugs and chase the dust out of the corners. Any day now the trees will start to bud. Any-day-now. One morning you will wake up, look out the window and the hillside will show the slightest tint of green. We won’t even get into the gardening. Waiting for those first tulips to pop up can make you go mad. That my friends is Spring Fever.

This Spring I have discovered a new type of fever; Spring Fever. It seems that I have managed to catch every nasty virus that has been lurking around the area all at the same time. I spent most of March sneezing, coughing and hacking. Drifting through my nights in a Nyquil haze curled around a heating pad to try to ease the aches. I was finally beginning to think it was over. Except for a slight cough, nothing some Halls couldn’t take care of, I was feeling myself again. And then came the Easter egg. The Easter egg that must have been just a wee bit past its expiration date. It tasted perfectly fine. Around 6:30 the next morning I woke up to that ugly sensation in my stomach. That little warning sensation. The one that tells you that getting to the bathroom now would be a very good idea. And you know what is coming next; its a purging of a whole ‘nother kind. Food poisoning. I had it all, chills, fever, stomach cramps, heaving. There isn’t much you can do but ride it out and what a ride it was. Something akin to being on Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride while experiencing a bad acid trip. At one point I could actually feel the ceiling crushing me. This too has nearly passed. The worst is over. My poor stomach is sore from being wrenched for hours and I am in need of a good night’s sleep. Food is a bit of an issue. So far I have manged an apple and a can of Ginger Ale.

Screw Spring – bring on Summer!
