The Death of the Democratic Party

Amidst pleas, from prominent political leaders in the democratic party, such as U.S. senator, Patrick J. Leahy of Vermont, for Senator Clinton to step down, we now have fighting breaking out in states across the country. There have been record turnouts at every primary and caucus held so far and some states, such as Texas, are still in the process of tabulating the results and the squabbling over delegates has begun to escalate. The situation in Texas has become so fierce that police have had to break up some of the heated exchanges between Clinton and Obama supporters. The tensions between the two candidates has also increased with each side launching attacks against the other. The idea of a “Dream Ticket” with either Clinton or Obama running as President and the other as Vice President is a ridiculous notion. The rift between these two candidates can’t be closed now.

Was Leahy out of line with his comment? No, I happen to think that he was right on the money. The simple fact of math still remains; Clinton cannot win enough delegates to claim the popular vote of the people. She has allowed her ambitions of sitting in the Oval Office to cloud all judgment and reason. By staying in this race she is destroying the Democratic party by ripping it apart, causing race and gender disputes amongst democrats and allowing McCain to begin his campaign for the national election uncontested. When was the last time either Clinton or Obama spoke about the issues? Obama made an attempt to counter McCain’s speech on the housing crisis, however, that was quickly overshadowed by the absolute bedlam that has ensued among democrats.

Perhaps more people will stand up as Leahy did and call for Clinton to step down. It’s unfortunate that she is so misguided to not see the devision she is causing. Any shred of respect I may have had for her is completely gone. Anyone who can continue to put their personal ambitions ahead of what may be best for the American people is definitely not of the character required for President.
