Snow Shoeing the Yard

January 12, 2008 · Posted in Rambles · Comment

We have been getting plenty of snow this season. Enough snow for me to tackle blazing a snow shoe trail through the yard. I tried to follow the golf course as best as possible, including creek crossings. Doodles accompanied me for this first round. She doesn’t quite get the whole snow shoe thing yet and kept standing on the back of the shoes. She almost sent me face-first a couple of times. It’s amazing how well she can porpoise through the deep snow. If you are headed out this way – bring your snow shoes. Nothing is better than a good heart thumping stroll followed by a dip in the hot tub.

Real ID – An Attempt At a National ID Card?

January 11, 2008 · Posted in Politics · Comment

They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security… Benjamin Franklin

Despite opposition from many states and privacy groups, such as the ACLU, Homeland Security is moving forward with their Real ID plan. This plan will require that everyone born after December 1, 1964 carry a Real ID card. These cards will be mandatory by 2014 and will be required if you wish to drive a car, get on a plane or enter a governmental building. Smells like a National ID card to me. The “Real ID Act’ flew through the House and Senate. It was attached to an Iraq spending bill in 2005. I suppose this was another bill that our elected officials couldn’t be bothered to read thoroughly. Some states have already passed legislation against the Real ID Plan for various reasons; privacy concerns, identity theft and cost. Thankfully, Colorado is one of those states.

Both Ron Paul and Barack Obama are against implementing any such ID card to the American public.

WordPress and Adding Line Breaks – a Hack

January 9, 2008 · Posted in Nerdy Stuff · 24 Comments

I came across the issue of adding a line break on one of my pages. This page contains an iframe, which may or may not be the root of the problem. My goal was to have a couple of lines of text, space, camera image, space, and a couple more lines of text. I finally got there, but it took a little Googling. I tried using the regular tags; <br> and <br />, but they didn’t work. The original code for the iframe had the image being aligned to the left. By deleting the align code I was able to get the second line of text to move to the bottom of the frame. I still wanted an extra space under the camera image. After Googling for line breaks I stumbled on A Truth Seeker’s blog and copied this little snippet of code:
<br clear="none" />
That did the trick. I’m calling this a hack since I didn’t really bother with too much research. I just tried stuff until I got my line break. I’m also a lazy html’er. I only learn code when I want to do something. Please feel free to add your comment, especially if you know what the correct solution should be.

The New Year & Some Politics

January 9, 2008 · Posted in Politics · Comment

First off – a Happy New Year to all.
I think 2008 is going to be an interesting year. Unless you have been living on a deserted island for all of 2007, we have a Presidential race to deal with. With no sitting President or Vice President running for re-election a wide open field of candidates are in the race. Two states have already completed their primaries; Iowa and New Hampshire. For the Democrats Obama captured a win in Iowa with Clinton squeaking a win out of New Hampshire. Huckabee took the win in Iowa for the Republicans with McCain taking New Hampshire. Regardless of what all of the talking heads in the media say, it’s still anyone’s ballgame.
