Bush’s (thankfully) Last State of the Union
One of the joys of not having television is that you don’t have to suffer through watching or listening to good ‘ole W. However, had I known about the Annual George W. Bush SOTU Drinking Game, I might have made an attempt at watching it.
If you also missed out on this celebration of our leader’s ineptitude, have no fear. I’m sure the speech is available for download somewhere on the Internets. And if you really want to destroy your liver you can probably find the other seven too.
Thank You, South Carolina!
I have to admit that I have been feeling a bit nervous about the upcoming Presidential election. I really didn’t think so many Americans would fall for Hillary Clinton. The woman scares the shit out of me and to find so many folks supporting her…
well, that scares the shit out of me even more.
The people of South Carolina were able to see through Hillary’s façade. Not only did Barack win, but he kicked some serious butt – 55 percent! Many of the polls leading up to the primary stated that Obama was having trouble securing the white vote. A quarter of the white vote is not exactly trouble. I think it proves that the thinking population is sick of business as usual coming out of the White House. At least, that is what I am hoping for. It is still early days as far as this race goes. Super Tuesday (Feb 5th) is looming. This is when 24 states will hold primaries or caucuses, with 52 percent of all pledged Democratic Party delegates and 41 percent of the total Republican Party delegates at stake. I may not have any fingernails left by the time that this is over.
Caroline Kennedy, the daughter of former President John F. Kennedy, has given her support to the Obama campaign:
“I have never had a president who inspired me the way people tell me that my father inspired them,” she wrote on The New York Times op-ed page. “But for the first time, I believe I have found a man who could be that president and not just for me, but for a new generation of Americans.”
I am a part of that ‘new generation’. Obama ’08.
Amending the Constitution to God’s Standards
I am not a religious person. I am also of the opinion that the vast majority of self-proclaimed religious people are nothing more than your garden variety hypocrite. They attend church every Sunday, Easter and Christmas therefore assuring themselves a first-class ticket straight to heaven. Most of these people are relatively harmless and can be ignored. However, there are others of the more fanatical ilk who cannot be. These are your fanatics. The ones who believe that their God is the only God and what He says goes and anyone not partaking of the Holy Koolaide is going to Hell. This brings me to a statement Mike Huckabee made to an audience in Michigan:
“I have opponents in this race who do not want to change the Constitution,” Huckabee told a Michigan audience on Monday. “But I believe it’s a lot easier to change the Constitution than it would be to change the word of the living god. And that’s what we need to do — to amend the Constitution so it’s in God’s standards rather than try to change God’s standards so it lines up with some contemporary view.”
Walkin’ the Poop Trail
Today was an absolutely beautiful day – sunshine, warm (31º) and no wind. I managed to get out into the yard for another trek with the snow shoes. It was much easier going this time around since I managed to get the trail packed down a bit yesterday. I added another loop to give it some more length. It’s probably around a quarter of a mile in one direction. The downfall of creating a nice walkable trail is that the dogs will use it also. When I go out again I will have to take a shovel with me to remove the poop on the path. Doodles made her contribution today. Having to avoid steamers takes a bit of the fun out of it I must say.
Downy Woodpecker
With the arrival of winter, the majority of birds leave us and migrate to warmer climates. We are usually left with a large flock of Black-Capped Chickadees, Magpies and one or two woodpeckers. This photo is of a male Downy-Woodpecker. He shows up sporadically throughout the year; taking a few sunflower seeds from the feeder and hiding them in an old stump in the yard. The chickadees are onto him though and can be seen pillaging his stash.
