Who would the WORLD elect for US President?

August 27, 2007 · Posted in Rambles · Comment

This is a very interesting site. Ron Paul gets a lot of votes from other countries. There are US citizens who don’t even know who he is. It’s a pity that the rest of the world pays more attention to our presidential candidates than the actual citizenry. I suppose it makes sense though, considering what an impact our country has on the rest of the world. I’d pay attention too. Check out the site and cast your vote.

String Cheese Incident: We Bid You Farewell

August 26, 2007 · Posted in Rambles · Comment

August 12, 2007; the final hurrah for the String Cheese Incident. Is it truly the end, just a hiatus and do we really care? I wasn’t planning on going to this show. I haven’t been able to really enjoy a Cheese show for a while now. In fact, the last time I saw them at Red Rocks, we left early to catch a late night Michael Franti show at the Fox Theater. However, this was their last show and I was given a pretty laminate that allowed me to go backstage. I have to hand it to the boys; they pulled off one hell of a finale’. None of the blubbering and sobbing that happened at some other band’s last performance. I thought it was interesting that they played three sets; a little bluegrass, some Keller Williams and then a bunch of trippy, green-laser, hippy-trance. A little something for everybody.
Here’s a few photos of the evening:

Summer of Destruction

The Picturesque ValleyAaah, Steamboat Springs in the summertime. It used to mean scenic mountain views, lazy tube rides down the Yampa River and strolling along Lincoln Avenue to do some window shopping. Well, all of that has changed. We got us some progress goin’ on now. Ten years of progress crammed into one summer. Yeehaw!! Once construction is completed on all of the massive buildings downtown and around the ski area, the only way to see the mountain views will be from the top of the mountain. The Yampa River (when it has water) looks more like an amusement ride at Disneyworld. All that is missing are the animated characters singing “It’s a Small World”. Lincoln Avenue has been transformed into a noisy, dusty, congested highway so clogged wih traffic and people that strolling is impossible.

Formula Stores Revisited

August 9, 2007 · Posted in Small Town Life · Comment

Hold onto your butts, folks! Here we go again…
City Council and the City Planners are getting together tonight to put into place an ordinance to keep out those evil “formula stores”. View the article in its entirety here.

Here are some highlights:

The ordinance stresses a need to preserve a small-town atmosphere in Old Town.
“The Historic Downtown Commercial Districts are a special and unique asset within the city which could be impacted by the presence of formula establishments that are out of harmony with the downtown districts and which do not contribute to the small town atmosphere,” the ordinance reads.

Is anyone else besides City Council still suffering from the delusion that this Historic Old Town still exists? And how many consultants at $300,000 each are we going to hire to evaluate what types of businesses will be appropriate for our small town atmosphere? We all know how much City Council loves their consultants.

Summer of Construction

August 8, 2007 · Posted in Small Town Life · Comment

I have decided to begin a project of the journalistic nature. A photo documentary of what is happening to a (once upon a time) small, peaceful, western cow town.
Steamboat Springs is currently undergoing a construction boom that could rival any major city in America. The dust and noise from all of the construction sites, the scaffolding along the sidewalks and the continuous traffic of dump trucks up and down Lincoln Avenue almost makes it feel like a major city in America.
My goal is to document the current stage of construction at the various sites throughout Steamboat Springs. This will include the school projects and the current disaster of the mountain. I regret not having started sooner; before existing buildings were torn down to make way for the new ones. Better late than never.
Stay tuned for updates of my progress.
